The Denver Post prep staff looks at Saturday’s action in high school sports:

BOYS BASKETBALL

Super Max

Max Wiepking scored 21 points Saturday as Kent Denver easily handled host Estes Park 66-43 in Class 3A nonleague play.

Holt Dunlap added 16 points for the Sun Devils, who led 20-8 after a quarter and 34-20 at halftime.

Luke Van Horn (14) and Austin Logan (10) paced the Bobcats.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Warriors roll

In Littleton, Amy Barczuk, who missed considerable time down the stretch last season due to injury, led all scorers with 29 points as Arapahoe downed Chatfield 61-52 in nonleague play.

Barczuk, a senior, made 10 field goals, including two 3-pointers, and 7-of-9 free throws. Chrissy Armstrong paced Chatfield with 17 points.

In the Collin County Classic in McKinney, Texas, Heritage (4-1) finished with two Saturday victories over Texas teams, 66-46 over Newman Smith and 68-65 over Mesquite.

Liz Little (12 points) and Natalie Woulf (10) paced the first victory, Kim Lockridge (26) the second.

ICE HOCKEY

Variety hat trick

Summit’s Jon Gutierrez had a hat trick as the Tigers downed Aspen’s Skiers 4-1 at Howelsen Ice Arena in Steamboat Springs.

Gutierrez scored every kind of goal save for even strength. In the second period, he tallied a short-hander, then added another on the power play. In the third period, his empty-netter was unassisted.

In other action, Matt Dawes put up a 19-save shutout, Jon Winkelblech scored two goals and added an assist, and Cody Fritz had three assists as Steamboat Springs beat Battle Mountain 4-0. Jake Bearss added a goal for the Sailors.

WRESTLING

Mat matters

Grand Junction had six weight-class winners in muscling its way to the Liberty Bell Invitational championship at Heritage in Littleton.

Dylon Thompson (103 pounds), Chase Arrieta (112), Chris Rivera (119), Anthony Guillen (125), Jesse Hoffschneider (135) and Jace Casey (145) led the Tigers to 188.5 points. Heritage Red (178.5) and ThunderRidge (144) were next.

At the 32nd Arapahoe Invitational, Fort Collins grabbed four first-place finishes to outlast Thompson Valley for the team title.

Fort Collins finished with 194.5 points to Thompson Valley’s 193.5, which had only one champion but five runners-up and three third-place winners.
