DENVER—Democratic Sen. Ken Salazar already has nearly half a million dollars in the bank for his race, even though he doesn’t face re-election for two more years.

Salazar held his first fundraiser for 2010 last week in Denver, and his staff reported Monday that he raked in more than $400,000. About 450 people attended the bash at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, including former Denver mayor Frederico Pena.

If Salazar faces a rigorous challenge in two years, history suggests he’ll need to raise much more money. This year’s contest for retiring Sen. Wayne Allard’s open Senate seat saw Republican Bob Schaffer and Democratic Rep. Mark Udall, the eventual winner, raise more than $17 million combined.
