DENVER—A vacancy committee has nominated three Democratic lawmakers to replace Republican Secretary of State Mike Coffman, who was elected to Congress.

The committee on Tuesday nominated Rep. Bernie Buescher of Grand Junction, Senate Majority Leader Ken Gordon of Denver and House Speaker Andrew Romanoff of Denver.

Buescher was a strong contender to be the next speaker of the House until he was defeated by Republican challenger Laura Bradford last month in an upset.

Gordon and Romanoff are term-limited and will leave office next month.

Gordon ran for secretary of state in 2006, losing to Coffman by 23,000 votes.

Gov. Bill Ritter, a Democrat, has said he will choose Coffman’s replacement after his resignation next month.
