CORTEZ, Colo.—Investigators say a chemical accelerant was used to start a fire that destroyed an unoccupied car that belonged to District Judge Sharon Hansen’s family in Cortez last September.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation reported its findings to Cortez police on Monday. Police say the investigation is continuing.

They have not publicly discussed a motive, and Hansen has declined comment.

A neighbor spotted the car fire in Hansen’s driveway at about 1 a.m. on Sept. 19 and called authorities. A second car had minor damage.

Hansen is one of two judges in the 22nd District, which includes Montezuma and Dolores counties in southwestern Colorado.
