The driver of a semi hauling two trailers was distracted by his cellphone and ran his rig off Interstate 76 near East 88th Avenue on Wednesday, causing a massive morning rush-hour traffic snarl.

The driver, Aaron Dixon, 42, of Lakewood, ran the truck off the right side of the highway, striking a guardrail, Trooper David Hall of the Colorado State Patrol said. Debris from the guardrail hit a sport utility vehicle, a sedan and a second semi, causing secondary accidents. Dixon was not seriously injured.

“Cellphones and driving don’t mix; this could have been a multi-fatality accident,” Hall said. “It could have been a lot worse.”
