COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—The El Paso County clerk and recorder has laid off 19 employees after budget cuts prompted by a failed sales tax increase proposal in November.
Clerk and recorder Bob Balink says reduced staffing levels will mean longer lines for getting marriage licenses and renewing vehicle registrations.
The staffers were let go Monday. Balink’s office will also not be filling seven vacancies.
Staffing levels at the clerk and recorder’s office are now at 1995 levels, and the operating budget is about $6.1 million less than it was in the previous fiscal year.
Balink says the downtown office will be closed Fridays to save money on utilities. Staffers there will work four 10-hour days starting in January.
