Former University of Denver attackman Ryan Zordani was among three former DU players amid the seven selected by the Denver Outlaws in Wednesday’s Major League Lacrosse supplemental draft.
“We got guys who will add depth and compete for spots in every position,” said Outlaws general manager/coach Brian Reese. “A lot of them have local ties and I think when guys from Denver have a chance to play in their hometown they take a lot of pride in that opportunity.”
Zordani, a Heritage High graduate, made the Outlaws’ practice squad as a rookie last summer. Since he was not among the top 23 Outlaws shielded from the draft, he could have been picked by other teams if Reese had not claimed him in the third round.
“He’s big and strong and can shoot,” Reese said. “He’s got to work on his accuracy and learn the league and the team a little better. This could be a break-out year for him.”
Reese also selected: Mathew Scanlon, a defenseman from Fairfield in the first round; Yale attackman Tyler Casertano in the second round; fourth-round pick Brett Hamilton-Koll, a DU midfielder; fifth-rounder Jason Rostan, a midfielder from Hampden-Sydney; Jonathan Paulson, a DU attackman in the sixth round; and Kent Denver graduate Alexander Pritzlaff, a defenseman from Hampden-Sydney, in the seventh round.
Scanlon is expected to boost a defense corp which is allowed to have a fourth long-pole defender because of a rule change approved last month.
The Outlaws (8-4) advanced to the MLL title game in August and lost to Rochester.
