Denver Post staff writer Jon E. Yunt looks ahead to action in high school sports:
BOYS BASKETBALL
Paging Kiowa’s awesome Mr. Young
Kiowa’s Zach Young had one of those nights last Friday at his school’s invitational tournament against Elbert. The senior recorded a triple-double with 40 points, 12 rebounds and an astonishing 10 steals. To prove that the final stat wasn’t a fluke, the 6-foot-2 forward was up to his thieving ways the next night against Front Range Christian, when he grabbed 11 steals and scored 21 points. Kiowa ventures to Limon on Friday before returning home to face unbeaten Genoa-Hugo on Saturday.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Wildcat momentum
Sure, it was a couple of months ago, but the whole St. Mary’s Academy community is still on a high from its state field hockey championship. The mojo has fed onto the basketball court, where the Wildcats are 3-0. Coach Phillip Gentry’s team has a Friday-Saturday doubleheader against a pair of perfect teams with Class 2A Lutheran (Parker) at home on Friday and then at Manitou Springs on Saturday.
GIRLS SWIMMING
Warm up the pool
We are still a week and half away from the biggest girls swim meet of the year not called the state meet. The Coaches Invite is Dec. 20 at the Mountain View Aquatic Center in Loveland, but the Mountain Lions will get ready with their own invitational Saturday. On hand will be the usual northern powers from Fort Collins and Estes Park.
ICE HOCKEY
“Coach, our line starts, eh?”
There were a few surprises in Week 1 of the high school hockey season — see Rampart and Steamboat Springs on the positive side of those surprises. The Sailors ripped through the trio of fellow mountain dwellers, including getting 51 saves from goalie Matt Dawes in a 3-2 overtime victory over Aspen. Steamboat makes the trip from Routt County for a Friday night skate with Standley Lake’s Gators and Saturday against Colorado Academy/Mullen. Also of note on Friday night is 2-0 Cheyenne Mountain against 2-0 Lewis-Palmer.
WRESTLING
Prepping for the biggies
Much like the girls swimmers, grapplers are a week away from two of the state’s bigger holiday wrestling galas in Greeley and Grand Junction. That said, it’s another busy week full of tournaments, including the dual tournaments at Grandview and Columbine.
