Denver is a finalist for the 2010, 2011 or 2012 NCAA men’s lacrosse championships, along with Baltimore, New Jersey and Boston. The NCAA is expected to award the championships in late January or early February.
The event would be held at Invesco Field at Mile High.
The U.S. Air Force Academy is the host institution, aided by the University of Denver. Metro Denver Sports Commission president KieAnn Brownell guaranteed $3 million at the final presentation. Among the selling points, the league-leading and record-setting attendance marks of the Mammoth and Outlaws and the growth of the youth game, as evidenced by 30 Colorado prep players recruited by Division I schools in the past two years.
Former AFA coach Fred Acee, DU coach Jamie Munro, Denver Outlaws general manager Brian Reese and former Outlaws goalie and NCAA Final Four participant Trevor Tierney (Princeton) were among the presenters. While the event has always been held on the East Coast, Munro pointed out that choosing a fast-growing area in the central part of the nation could dramatically boost attendance for the three-day event.
