The Colorado State Patrol reported that the driver of a Jeep Cherokee drove off U.S. 6 after a brief chase late Saturday night.

The driver left the road around 11:23 p.m. and was ejected from the vehicle, which ended up going into Clear Creek just west of Golden, said patrol spokesman David Hall.

Hall said the driver died.

A trooper tried to pull the vehicle over for weaving in traffic, but the driver fled. It was unclear which direction the Jeep was traveling.

Further details were not expected until later this morning.
