A group of Rocky Mountain News employees are talking about creating a website for readers as part of their strategy to deal with the decision to sell the newspaper.

The site “will serve as a rallying point for people to show their support of the Rocky and what it means to them and the community,” said the group’s spokesman, John Ensslin.

About 30 staff members met Saturday to discuss this month’s decision by publisher E.W. Scripps Co. to sell the newspaper. Meetings will continue, Ensslin said.

The decision by Scripps to put its flagship newspaper up for sale comes at a time when newspapers across the country are struggling with diminishing advertising dollars and subscriptions.

On Friday, Denver Post publisher Dean Singleton asked unions at The Post and the Denver Newspaper Agency to reopen their labor contracts immediately, with the goal of cutting expenses by $20 million.

The DNA handles business functions for both The Post and the News as part of a joint operating agreement.
