A Colorado state trooper jumped out of his vehicle at the last minute Sunday as a Toyota 4Runner crashed into the roadside fender-bender he was investigating.

The trooper was taking an accident report about 4 p.m. after a Ford Explorer and a semi trailer collided in the southbound lanes of Interstate 25 at 84th Avenue in Thornton, said Trooper David Hall.

The 4Runner hit the vehicles pulled to the side of the road. Three people inside the 4Runner were seriously injured and airlifted to hospitals. Hall had no information about their identities or conditions shortly afterward.

“It was a very serious accident,” he said.

The drivers in the initial crash were not injured. The trooper was grazed by the wreck but was able to stay and help those who were injured inside the 4Runner, Hall said.
