Toy-making giant Mattel agreed to pay $12 million to 42 states to settle claims it shipped toys tainted with lead paint, according to Colorado Attorney General John Suthers.
The agreement was filed in a Boston court and resolves a 15-month probe of Mattel’s Chinese-made Sesame Street dolls, Dora the Explorer accessories and dozens of products shipped to the U.S. last year. The toys never reached store shelves and Mattel has agreed to change its practices.
Colorado’s portion of the settlement — $228,800 — will be used for consumer protection, education and enforcement efforts, Suthers said in a news release Monday.
