The world’s longest ski lift made its debut at Intrawest-owned Whistler-Blackcomb on Friday, linking the two namesake peaks (Whistler at 7,160 feet and Blackcomb at 8,000 feet) in coastal British Columbia.
The record-breaking Peak 2 Peak gondola connects the two mountains at a point where they are 2.7 miles apart, requiring an unsupported span nearly 2 miles wide where the 28-person cabs dangle 1,427 feet above ground (complete with an aircraft warning system).
Rides last 11 minutes, allowing 4,100 skiers and snowboarders per hour to sample the snow of both summits without making the mile-long vertical ski descent through notoriously fickle conditions before taking a series of lifts back up the other side.
