DENVER—Gov. Bill Ritter has told state agencies to draw up contingency plans for budget cuts ahead of expected bad news in a revenue forecast coming Friday.
Ritter has already imposed a hiring freeze on departments that aren’t related to public health and safety. He also froze college construction projects and further full-day kindergarten grants, saving an estimated $85 million.
He estimates a 2.5 percent cut would save an additional $200 million.
Ritter says revenue from sales taxes, corporate income taxes and personal income taxes have been steadily declining as the economy worsens.
