CHARLOTTE, N.C. — NASCAR has settled a $225 million lawsuit filed by a former official who said she was subjected to racial discrimination and sexual harassment during her two-plus years working for the stock-car organization.
The suit was settled during a Dec. 3 mediation held in New York between Mauricia Grant, who is black, and NASCAR. Settlement terms were confidential. Neither side admitted liability or wrongdoing, according to NASCAR.
• NASCAR will test drivers for performance-enhancing drugs next month under a tougher policy that also bans using illegal drugs and abusing prescription medications.
• The Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix, an IRL race scheduled for Sept. 4-6, was canceled because of economic problems in Michigan and the country.
Forward Sundin joins Canucks
VANCOUVER, B.C. — Former Toronto Maple Leafs captain Mats Sundin signed a one-year contract with the Vancouver Canucks.
The forward, who has 555 goals and 766 assists in 17 seasons with the Quebec Nordiques and the Maple Leafs, is expected to join the Canucks right after Christmas, when he returns from Sweden.
• Dallas Stars defenseman Sergei Zubov will undergo hip surgery next month and will be out indefinitely.
• St. Louis Blues defenseman Eric Brewer will undergo surgery for a herniated disc in his back and will be sidelined indefinitely.
• Goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere has left the Anaheim Ducks to return home to Montreal following his father’s death.
Mississippi coach arrested
CINCINNATI — Police arrested Andy Kennedy after a cab driver said the Mississippi basketball coach punched him while calling him “bin Laden” and other racial insults. A pretrial hearing has been set for Jan. 16. Kennedy, who denied the allegations, was charged with a first-degree misdemeanor count of assault, which would carry a maximum sentence of six months in jail for conviction.
• Ohio State junior forward David Lighty will miss 6-12 weeks after undergoing surgery to repair a broken bone in his left foot.
