OURAY, Colo.—U.S. 550 over Red Mountain Pass has been closed down while crews trigger an avalanche threatening the highway.

Gene Towne of the Colorado Department of Transportation says crews may also have to do similar work on Coal Bank Pass and Molas Pass later Thursday.

Coal Bank and Molas are south of Red Mountain on U.S. 550. The three passes are south of Ouray (you-RAY’ and about 200 miles southwest of Denver.

Red Mountain Pass is 11,000 feet above sea level. Coal Bank is 10,600 feet and Molas is 10,900 feet.

Highway crews periodically close mountain roads and trigger avalanches to prevent slides from catching drivers unaware.
