Brrr by Widmer Brothers Brewing Co. $7.48 per six-pack
In keeping with our almost constantly subfreezing weather of late, Portland, Ore.’s Widmer Brothers have unveiled Brrr, a new seasonal that’s a springlike twist on a winter warmer. It’s a dark-amber pour with medium body and a thin cream-colored head that dissipates quickly — nothing special there. The nose on this ale is ripe with floral hops, indicating a typical West Coast IPA, but this brew isn’t piney. In fact, the dominant flavor is bitter grapefruit, as Brrr heads straight for the back of the tongue. Widmer uses a proprietary blend of hops it calls Alchemy as a bittering agent, which is a pleasant contrast to the aroma. Fragrant Simcoe and Cascade hops are also used. Carbonation is light, making it an easy drinker and a good food companion; holiday turkey and ham are good matches. Alcohol by volume of 7.2 percent makes Brrr a toasty friend to sit around the fire with. Note:Be sure to check the blog for my Beer of the Year!
