ST. LOUIS — Jay Zygmunt, the St. Louis Rams’ president of football operations, resigned Monday.

Longtime team president John Shaw also is expected to scale back his activities as part of a restructuring under new owner Chip Rosenbloom. The Rams are 2-13 this season, 5-26 in two years.

It’s anticipated that Billy Devaney, the executive vice president of player personnel, will be promoted to general manager and will head the search. The list of candidates will include Jim Haslett, who replaced Scott Linehan after an 0-4 start and produced two quick victories.

• Herm Edwards could be coaching his last game with the Chiefs, but insists that stripping the Chiefs of most of their aging veterans and going with so many young people was the right thing to do, even though it’s led to this year’s 2-13 record. Owner Clark Hunt is searching for a new general manager.

• Dick Jauron’s future as coach of the Bills (7-8) will be determined in the next two weeks, owner Ralph Wilson told The Associated Press.

• Raiders interim coach Tom Cable lobbied for the full-time job, saying stability at the head coaching position would help the team make it back to the postseason. Cable is 3-8 since taking over for the fired Lane Kiffin in September.

• Coach Romeo Crennel still believes he can turn the Browns back into winners. The Browns failed to score an offensive touchdown for the fifth straight game Sunday to finish 1-7 at home, one season after going 7-1 and winning 10 games.

Crennel declined to confirm a report that defensive end Shaun Smith punched quarterback Brady Quinn last week in the team’s weight room.

A Western farewell

ROTAN, Texas — Sammy Baugh, the NFL’s original gunslinger, has been given a cowboy send-off. A saddle and chaps were draped over his coffin at the front of First Baptist Church. Baugh was taken by hearse to a cemetery, and a horse-drawn wagon awaited for the procession to the grave site. He was the last surviving member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s inaugural class of 1963.

Footnotes.

Right tackle Stacy Andrews has a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, leaving the Bengals’ franchise player with an uncertain future heading into the offseason. Dennis Roland is expected to start the final game against Kansas City.

• Raiders Pro Bowl CB Nnamdi Asomugha underwent tests on his injured neck that forced him out of the game, but Cable does not believe the injury is serious.

• Rams running back Antonio Pittman was fined $25,000 after skipping practice Saturday. Guard Jacob Bell (hamstring) was scheduled for an MRI exam Monday night, and Haslett said tight end Daniel Fells also had an MRI exam that revealed a bone bruise in his right knee.

• A spectator pleaded not guilty to charges of trespassing and assault and battery for tackling Patriots linebacker Junior Seau on the sideline during the team’s 47-7 win over Arizona on Sunday. “I meant to give him a big hug,” Todd Kobus said in court.

• Plaxico Burress was sued in Broward County (Fla.) Circuit Court for rear-ending a woman’s car in May. According to a document provided by the woman’s attorney, Burress’ car insurance lapsed three days before the crash.
