COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—A Fort Carson soldier accused of killing two people on a motorcycle has told investigators that bad brakes caused him to crash into the bike.
Eighteen-year-old Pfc. Brandon Howard faces vehicular homicide charges. Authorities say he was racing another driver earlier this month when he lost control of his Pontiac Grand Prix and slammed into the motorcycle.
The motorcyclist and his passenger were killed—57-year-old Charles F. Coggins of Widefield and 47-year-old Jacquelyn “Shelly” Hansen of Arvada.
Howard was released on $10,000 bond but has been ordered to live on post and not drive.
The Marrero, La., native has argued he was trying to prevent the crash but that his brakes didn’t work. Police say he was racing a black sedan and driving erratically.
