ANOTHER MIAMI PLAYER SUSPENDED FOR BOWL GAME
MIAMI — Miami punt snapper Chris Ivory will not play in Saturday’s Emerald Bowl because he violated an unspecified team rule. He is the fifth Hurricane suspended for the final game of the season.
Ivory did not accompany the Hurricanes to San Francisco, where Miami (7-5) will face California (8-4) on Saturday.
He also was suspended for the season opener against Charleston Southern for another rules violation, but won Miami’s Albert Bentley Award as the team’s most valuable walk-on player.
Jake Byrne, who handles snaps on field goals, will take over Ivory’s punt-team duties. Byrne also will be the backup quarterback behind Jacory Harris, who will start after Robert Marve was suspended for missing classes.
Tight ends Richard Gordon and Tervaris Johnson, along with linebacker Jordan Futch, also were suspended last week for the bowl game because of team rule violations.
Famed surgeon Steadman recovering from blood clot
VAIL — Surgeon Richard Steadman, whose Vail clinic has treated some of the nation’s elite athletes, says he suffered a serious blood clot in his lungs this month but expects a full recovery.
Steadman told the Vail Daily in Thursday’s editions that he got emergency “clot buster” treatment on Dec. 5.
In an e-mail to the newspaper, Steadman said a combination of quick response by EMTs after his wife called 911 and the clot buster treatment by Dr. Larry Gall “no doubt saved my life.” Steadman says he hopes to resume seeing patients after the holidays.
Steadman specializes in knee surgery at the Steadman-Hawkins Clinic in Vail. The clinic’s patients have included Kobe Bryant, Bode Miller, Picabo Street, Larry Walker, John Elway and Greg Norman.
He also has been the surgeon for the U.S. Ski Team.

The Minnesota Twins are going to give it one more try with knuckleballer R.A. Dickey.
The sides have reached agreement on a contract that will give Dickey a chance to make the pitching staff as middle reliever and spot starter. Dickey, 34, was 5-8 with a 5.21 ERA in 32 games, including 14 starts, for Seattle last season.
What might have influenced the Twins was his relief record: 2-0 with a 2.00 ERA.
Dickey says he picked the Twins over a return to the Mariners.
