CAIRO — A German military helicopter foiled an attempt by pirates to seize an Egyptian ship off the coast of Somalia on Thursday.
The Egyptian bulk carrier Wadi al-Arab, with 31 crew members, was passing through the Gulf of Aden when gun-toting pirates in a speedboat began pursuing it, officials said. A passing ship alerted the International Maritime Bureau’s piracy reporting center, which in turn prompted the German navy frigate Karlsruhe to dispatch a helicopter. The chopper chased the pirates away from the ship, which continued on its way to South Korea where it was delivering 56,000 tons of wheat from Ukraine.
