DENVER—The Weld County district attorney’s office has moved to increase the potential sentence in a case against a man accused of killing a transgender woman in Greeley.
The office filed habitual criminal charges against 32-year-old Allen Andrade of Thornton on Tuesday.
Andrade already faced charges of first-degree murder after deliberation, bias-motivated crime, motor vehicle theft and identity theft in the July 17 death of 18-year-old Angie Zapata.
The habitual criminal charge could potentially increase his sentence to four times the maximum for each underlying conviction.
Zapata was born as a male but was living as a woman. Prosecutors say Andrade beat her to death with his fists and a fire extinguisher after discovering she was biologically male.
Andrade’s jury trial is scheduled to begin April 14.
