OTTAWA — John Tavares scored three goals and Canada overcame an early three-goal deficit to beat the United States 7-4 on Wednesday night to earn a bye into the semifinals in the world junior hockey championship.

Jordan Eberle, Zach Boychuk, Tyler Ennis and Cody Hodgson also scored for four-time defending champion Canada (4-0), down 3-0 midway through the first period in the Group A game in front of a tournament-record 20,223 fans at Scotiabank Place.

Kevin Shattenkirk, Jimmy Hayes, Jim O’Brien and Jonathan Blum scored for the United States, which will face Slovakia on Friday.

Barkley arrested for DUI.

Charles Barkley was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol early Wednesday in Scottsdale, Ariz.

An officer with a task force that targets drunken driving saw the former NBA star run a stop sign, Gilbert police Lt. Eric Shuhandler said. Barkley was in Scottsdale’s Old Town area, a trendy spot in the Phoenix area.

Barkley was cited and released. His car was impounded and he left in a cab, Shuhandler said.

• Washington Wizards forward Caron Butler had an MRI that revealed no serious damage to his injured left ankle.

The MRI confirmed the initial diagnosis of a sprain and he will continue to be listed as day-to-day.

• Orlando Magic guard Mickael Pietrus will be out indefinitely after breaking his right wrist on a dunk against Detroit on Monday.

Indians trade for DeRosa.

The Cleveland Indians acquired versatile infielder Mark DeRosa to play third base, trading three minor-leaguers to the Chicago Cubs.

They dealt pitchers Jeff Stevens, Chris Archer and John Gaub for DeRosa, who played six different positions for the NL Central champions.

• The Cubs and infielder Aaron Miles agreed to a two-year, $4.9 million contract.

The switch-hitting former member of the Colorado Rockies batted .317 with four homers and 31 RBIs in 134 games for the St. Louis Cardinals last season.
