XGR–SURVEY-DEATH PENALTY

OMAHA—With death penalty opponent Ernie Chambers out of the way, an attempt to change Nebraska’s method of execution to lethal injection seems likely to be successful when the Legislature convenes next week. Gov. Dave Heineman and Attorney General Jon Bruning, both Republicans, have said they want the issue decided this session. The Nebraska Supreme Court in February declared electrocution—the state’s only means of execution—cruel and unusual punishment, and therefore unconstitutional. By Anna Jo Bratton.

CHIMNEY ROCK PHOTO

OMAHA—The oldest known surviving photograph of the iconic Chimney Rock in western Nebraska has been found, of all places, on the Internet auction site eBay. Featured on Nebraska’s license plates in the 1990s and, more recently, on the state quarter, Chimney Rock received prominent mention in diaries of pioneers migrating west on the Oregon, Mormon and California trails in the mid-1800s.
