An unattended candle burned an eight-unit townhome in Wheat Ridge early today, causing heavy damage and displacing families living there for the foreseeable future.

Everyone inside, about a dozen people, got out safely. The second story apartment where the fire started is likely a total loss, and the building has significant roof damage, said Scott Pribble, spokesman for the Arvada Fire Department.

The Arvada Fire Protection District, which serves the area around the fire at 10900 West 44th Place, was called just before 4 p.m., Pribble said.

Family and friends took in many of families and the American Red Cross helped others, he said.

The 6,732 square-foot building is currently listed for sale at $750,000, according to a public records search.
