RATON, N.M.—The state Mining and Minerals Division has awarded a $400,000 contract Monday to a Colorado firm to clean up abandoned coal mines on the scenic Vermejo Park Ranch.

The three-year project, awarded to Water and Earth Technologies, Inc., of Fort Collins, Colo., will identify methods to protect the public and the environment from hazards posed by abandoned mines.

The initial project will cover several abandoned coal mines, including the Gardiner, Swastika, and Brilliant mines in Dillon Canyon near Raton.

New Mexico’s abandoned mine program works to identify dangerous abandoned mine areas and abate the hazards.
