DENVER—The Colorado Avalanche say Joe Sakic will be out for about 10 weeks after undergoing successful surgery for a herniated disc.
Sakic has not played since being diagnosed with a herniated disc Nov. 28 against the Phoenix Coyotes.
Avalanche physician Andrew Parker said Wednesday’s surgery was the best option for a complete recovery.
Sakic says he hopes to return for the final weeks of the season.
The Avalanche have been riddled with injuries this season. Top defenseman Adam Foote and gritty enforcer Ian Laperriere both sat out Tuesday’s game against the Predators. Foote sustained a triceps injury Sunday night in a 2-0 loss against Minnesota and Laperriere has a stiff back and is listed as day-to-day.
