GREELEY — At least 14 people were treated at hospitals and released after a carbon monoxide scare at Mountain States Ice Arena during a youth hockey game Saturday afternoon.
Children’s Hospital in Aurora told 9News it treated and released seven patients with carbon monoxide poisoning: four hockey players and three spectators.
Lutheran Hospital in Wheat Ridge said six hockey players were treated and released and Boulder Community Hospital reported that the coach of the Arvada Hockey Bantam AA team, Brad Elwell, was treated and released there.
The Greeley Fire Department told the television station that the incident happened about 3 p.m. A gas-powered ice edger was being used on the rink with the arena’s doors closed, and some people started complaining of headaches.
The Fire Department said carbon monoxide levels reached 400 parts per million. Anything above 35 parts per million is considered dangerous, and 1,200 parts per million can be fatal.
The carbon monoxide levels cleared quickly after the doors to the arena were opened. Play resumed once the air was clear.
