BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA — Six children are dead in the Argentine capital after a fire ripped through a former bank being used as a home by poor families.

Buenos Aires Civil Defense director Daniel Russo says the blaze began before dawn and the victims were all siblings, ages 1 to 13.

Their parents survived.

Russo said today that at least 28 people were “living illegally” in the building. Eight were injured in addition to the dead.

He did not know the cause of the fire.
