Denver Post staff writer Jon E. Yunt takes a look ahead at the action in high school sports:
BOYS BASKETBALL
Deputy sure can shoot
Just 10 miles of Highway 24 separate Class 3A Peyton and Class 2A Calhan. On Saturday the two teams ranked in the top five of their respective classifications — Peyton is No. 2 and Calhan No. 4 — will go at it. Guard play will be at a premium in this one. Calhan’s Logan Deputy and Peyton’s Brian Green are the go-to guys for their teams and if you like offense, there should be plenty. Deputy averages 17 points and ranks second on his team behind James Sawyer (18). Green, who poured in 34 points Tuesday against Manitou Springs, is averaging 26.
If last year’s 60-53 Panthers win is any indication, this one will be worth the drive.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Long night for Justice
Every time a score jumps out at you, you think, “How could that happen?” Such was the case Tuesday when Justice traveled to Greeley to play Frontier Academy and lost 94-1. Yes, 94-1. It was 48-0 at halftime. Can we get a mercy rule, please?
“There’s no mercy rule,” Frontier coach Nathan Buxton told the Greeley Tribune after the game. “Overall, I was really impressed with the attitude of the girls. They continued to work hard, but they respected their opponents.”
The Class 2A Wolverines (5-2) should get a tougher test Friday when they play Briggsdale.
GIRLS SWIMMING
Smoky Hill hosting
The highlight of a busy invitational weekend will be a big meet at Smoky Hill. The Buffs are led by Caroline Piehl. Other meets to keep an eye on will be in Jeffco and Pueblo, plus the annual “Interstate 8” at Englewood.
ICE HOCKEY
Horsepower kicks in
Heritage jumped up 2-0 on Ralston Valley before the loaded Mustangs roared back to win 8-3 on Tuesday. Ralston Valley (9-1), led in goals by Chase Newman’s 11, skates against Dakota Ridge tonight at the Apex Arena before getting ready for next week’s tests against Foothills League front-runners Bishop Machebeuf and Regis.
