WASHINGTON—Colorado Sen. Ken Salazar has begun his Senate confirmation hearing for his posting as secretary of the Department of the Interior.
The Democratic senator must be approved by the full Senate before joining the Cabinet of President-elect Barack Obama, who chose Salazar for the job last month.
Salazar’s hearing is Thursday before the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources.
If approved, Salazar would oversee some 500 million acres of federally owned lands, including national parks. Though the department has been plagued by scandal, there is little doubt Salazar will be confirmed.
In fact, he has already scheduled a farewell speech to the Senate for this afternoon.
