LOS ANGELES — A complete tusk believed to belong to a mammoth has been discovered in the Channel Islands, one of three known sites where a dwarf version of the prehistoric mammals once roamed.
If confirmed, researchers hope the rare find in a remote and rugged part of Santa Cruz Island will provide further clues about the evolution and eventual extinction of the pony-size mammoths.
Kristina Gill, an archaeology graduate student at the University of California, Santa Barbara, stumbled across the 4-foot-long tusk while working on the island’s mountainous northern shore.
