David Morelli’s first-period goal put the Rocky Mountain Rage ahead early against the visiting Wichita Thunder, and Mark Smith’s goal in the second period proved to be the game-winner in a 3-1 victory Sunday at the Broomfield Event Center.

The Rage swept a three-game home series with Wichita over the past week, with Morelli tallying a team-high five goals and one assist in that stretch. Rocky Mountain topped Wichita 7-1 on Friday and 3-1 last Sunday.

Conifer cowboy sets bareback riding record.

Conifer’s Tim Shirley set a Denver Coliseum record in bareback riding when he rode Cajun Queen for 90 points in the eighth performance of the National Western Stock Show Rodeo late Saturday.

Shirley, who finished 11th last season after the National Finals Rodeo in December, is atop the National Western bareback riding standings in the second round.

• Sunday’s action was highlighted by Tommy Edens of Gatesville, Texas, and Wade Clayton of Needville, Texas. The duo moved to the top of the team roping standings after securing times of 4.9 and 5.0 seconds.

State Games of America registration open.

The State Games of America are accepting athlete registration for elite, junior, senior, recreational and Paralympic divisions in 31 sports for competition starting July 30.
