Sprocket Design-Build President Bill Moore hasn’t been able to sell several of the townhomes he developed in the Santa Fe Arts District.

That’s good news for artists in the area. Moore is letting them use one of his units for free as temporary gallery space to showcase their work.

The townhome, at 570 Inca St., is one of eight that were developed as live-work space. Three units are still unsold. The townhomes range from 1,100 to 1,200 square feet.

“We are doing this in 30-day increments until we find something better to do with the space,” Moore said. “Someone already wants the space for October, but I’m a little reluctant to do that.”

The two-story townhome for use by artists has gallery space with 10-foot-high ceilings on the ground level and living space above. It would lease for $1,100 a month, Moore said. It has an asking price of $259,000.

The first show last month was wildly successful, Moore said. Artists included Ann Wallace, Sarah Fitzpatrick and Moore’s wife, Kristen Moore.

“My wife hung 33 pieces and sold 25,” Moore said. “It was one of her best shows ever just in terms of pure volume.”

Handbag designer Mignon Harris will display her work during February, and Angie Buxman will hang her paintings in the space in March.

Harris, who does business under the name B Bags, will open her show Feb. 6 as part of a monthly series of open houses known as First Friday at Santa Fe galleries. Joining her in the space will be jewelry designer Marta Designs and Cherry Bomb Crafts, a designer of faux-fur coats.

“It’s a wearable-art show,” said Harris, whose bags are handmade from reclaimed leather. “When Bill Moore said he had the space available, I just thought I’d put something together and see what happens.”
