Denver Post staff writer Jon E. Yunt takes a look ahead at the action in high school sports:

WRESTLING

Top of the Rockies

The annual gathering at Centaurus High School still garners one of the best fields in the state. It will take all your fingers and three toes to count state champions on hand for the two-day event, which starts at 1 p.m. Friday and concludes with the Parade of Champions and finals matches at 6 p.m. Saturday. In addition to the 13 individual state champs, reigning team champions from Ponderosa (5A), Northridge (4A) and Roosevelt (3A last year, now up at 4A) will compete. Tough guys from New Mexico (Rio Rancho), Utah (Uintah) and Wyoming (Cheyenne Central) also will be in Lafayette.

GIRLS SWIMMING

Dandy dual

Dual meet swimming doesn’t often make this section of the paper, but today’s Cherry Creek vs. Arapahoe matchup is worth your nickel, even in these hard economic times. The Bruins are loaded for bear (pun intended) — see the story to the right — and the Warriors are a traditional power that always seems to rise up to compete against the best teams. Arapahoe has a couple of great names. Look for Snoopy Slouka and Spiffy Spofford to make waves today.

ICE HOCKEY

A “must see”

Ralston Valley vs. Regis has all the makings of a classic. Arguably the best two teams in the state drop the puck at 5:45 p.m. Friday at the Family Sports Center. The Mustangs, fresh off a 5-4 overtime victory against Bishop Machebeuf, will try to dethrone the state’s last remaining unbeaten team. No team in state history has run the table.

SKIING

This is Colorado, right?

With the recent 70-degree temperatures, it’s almost hard to imagine hitting the slopes. The links seem more appropriate. Still, the races must go on, and this weekend the downhillers are at Ski Cooper and Eldora, and the nordic types are in Frisco for Summit’s 3K duathalon.
