Authorities have released the name of an 83-year-old man who died on a frozen Arvada pond while possibly attempted to save his dog.
Maximiano Vigil was pulled from the 4-acre pond near 51st and Garrison Street in Arvada just before 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.
A woman called 911 Wednesday afternoon reporting a Husky on the ice, said Susan Medina, Arvada police spokeswoman.
An Arvada Animal Management Officer pulled a Husky from the ice with a catch pole, Medina said. The Husky was about 10 feet from the shore at the time.
Firefighters spotted a baseball cap in the water and immediately jumped into the pond and pulled the elderly man from the water, she said.
He was taken to Lutheran Hospital in Wheat Ridge where he was later pronounced dead.
It is not clear if the dog ran onto the ice and the gentleman tried to rescue the Husky, or whether Vigil fell in and the dog followed.
