BOULDER, Colo.—Two former Colorado football players were sentenced to at least a year in prison on Thursday after pleading guilty to an apartment robbery.
Bernard Jackson, a former starting quarterback, and Lionel Harris, a safety, pleaded guilty to burglary and menacing as part of an agreement with prosecutors.
They were sentenced to 5 1/2 years in prison but could be released after a year for good behavior and participating in rehabilitation programs.
They were accused of breaking into an apartment and stealing $500 last June. Authorities say the pair were wearing masks and had a handgun.
Jackson, 23, was Colorado’s starting quarterback in 2006 but was academically ineligible for his senior season in 2007.
He tearfully apologized in court.
“This is definitely something I never expected or imagined,” he said. “It’s definitely changed my life. I’ll do whatever it takes to better myself.”
Harris, 24, last played in the 2007 season. He also apologized in court.
“I want to apologize namely to the victims and their family, and the community for the harm I’ve done,” Harris said. “I’m gonna do everything in my power to make amends for this and the people I’ve hurt.”
In exchange for Jackson and Harris’ guilty pleas, prosecutors dismissed more than a dozen other charges, including aggravated robbery, criminal trespassing, first-degree burglary and theft.
They were also ordered to serve seven years on parole and pay $425 in restitution.
