MONTREAL — Penguins captain Sidney Crosby will miss the NHL All-Star Game because of a left knee injury.
Lightning scoring leader Martin St. Louis replaced Crosby on Thursday on the Eastern Conference roster. The game is Sunday at the Bell Centre.
Crosby, second in the NHL scoring race with 60 points on 17 goals and 43 assists, missed a game Friday night because of the knee injury, and was struck twice on the left arm by pucks during a 2-1 loss to the Hurricanes on Tuesday night. He played in the Penguins’ final two games before the break, then was examined by doctors Wednesday and Thursday.
Crosby’s status for the Penguins’ Jan. 28 game against the Rangers in Pittsburgh won’t be determined until the team resumes practice Monday.
• Canadiens winger Alex Kovalev and Sharks center Joe Thornton were named captains for the game.
Briere to miss at least four weeks
PHILADELPHIA — Flyers center Danny Briere will miss at least four weeks after undergoing groin surgery.
Briere had surgery to repair a nerve, Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said. Briere has missed the last 22 games with a groin strain.
Briere appeared ready to return to the Flyers last week after recording a goal and four assists in a three-game rehab assignment with the team’s American Hockey League affiliate. But he was still bothered by the injury.
“This is not good news for us because of Danny’s abilities offensively,” Holmgren said. “It’s certainly decent enough news that it’s only going to be a month, but we’d all rather have him in the lineup.”
Briere has five goals and four assists in nine games this season. He had 31 goals and 41 assists last season.
Senators place Gerber on waivers
OTTAWA — Goalie Martin Gerber was placed on waivers by the Senators.
Gerber is 4-9-1 with an .899 save percentage and a 2.86 goals-against average in 14 games this season, the final one of his $11.1 million, three-year deal.
He became the odd man out in net with the emergence of rookie Brian Elliott. The Associated Press
