LINCOLN, Neb.—Nebraska athletic director Tom Osborne says the economic downturn should not force his 23-program department into making cuts.

Stanford athletic director Bob Bowlsby said this week that he expects his program to make large cuts to handle a projected $5 million loss in revenue over the next three years. Stanford has one of the nation’s biggest departments, with 35 sports.

Nebraska has a $75.2 million budget for fiscal year 2009, and a small surplus is expected. There are 230 full-time employees in the department.

Osborne says nothing is guaranteed, but the program should be fine as long as the football stadium continues to sell out, men’s basketball operates in the black and television and Big 12 bowl revenue remains strong.
