DENVER—A $3.3 million prize will be on the line Saturday when the Colorado Lottery’s first jackpot game marks its 20th anniversary.
The state’s first Lotto tickets went on sale Jan. 24, 1989, with first-day sales of the $1 tickets surpassing $218,000. The first drawing took place on a Saturday four days later.
Lottery officials say Lotto proved so popular, drawings were increased to twice a week with a Wednesday draw added in 1990.
In the past 20 years, the Colorado Lottery says Lotto has made millionaires of 368 people and returned more than $572 million to the state. Proceeds from Lotto and other games help fund organizations like Great Outdoors Colorado and Colorado State Parks.
The largest Lotto jackpot was $27 million won by a Boulder woman in 1992.
