Six missing skiers who were headed for a backcountry hut have been found safe, Pitkin County officials reported this afternoon.

The group was spotted a little before 11 a.m. and was safely out of the backcountry by 1 p.m., officials said.

Earlier, a man who became separated from the six skiers reported them lost yesterday about 12 miles south of the Aspen Mountain ski area in whiteout conditions.

The Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office reported that it received a telephone call yesterday from the man, who was not injured, at 6:36 p.m.

The man told authorities that he had been hiking with the group in the Goodwin-Greene Hut area, which is located at the head of the Difficult Creek drainage.

The six people were described as being experienced skiers who were on their way to a hut in the area but had not been there before.
