This week’s cold, snowy weather may have an upside for freeride skiers and snowboarders hoping to get their urban jib on. With any luck, it will lead to the opening of the Ruby Hill Rail Yard. The opening has been postponed since Jan. 17 because of unseasonably warm weather. Denver Parks and Recreation has not set a new date for the return of the nation’s only urban rail park, built in collaboration with Winter Park Resort, SOS Outreach and Christy Sports.
The free terrain park located off South Platte River Drive and West Florida Avenue eventually will be open every day from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. Opening day will feature demonstrations by Winter Park athletes and free snowboard lessons for local youth interested in trying a new sport or fine-tuning their techniques.
New this year, Christy Sports will provide free ski and snowboard rental every Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 3:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
