The Sun Belt Conference named the University of Denver’s Nate Rohnert its men’s basketball player of the week Monday after the former Chaparral High School star led the Pioneers to a 78-74 victory over Western Kentucky at Magness Arena on Saturday.
Rohnert, a 6-foot-5 junior, scored on a layup with 13 seconds remaining to clinch DU’s upset of the Hill- toppers, who advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament last season. Rohnert scored a game-high 22 points, grabbed six rebounds and set career highs with nine assists and four steals. He is averaging 15.1 points and 4.6 assists for DU (8-11, 3-5 Sun Belt).
Peek, Shirley shine at rodeo.
Pueblo’s Josh Peek won the tie-down roping buckle and finished third in steer wrestling to win the all-around title at the National Western Stock Show Rodeo on Sunday.
Peek had a total of 24.9 seconds in tie-down roping. He earned a total of $13,158 for the all-around title.
In bareback riding, Conifer’s Tim Shirley tied for the title with Dustin Reeves of Owanka, S.D. Shirley led the pack of 12 riders entering Sunday, before he rode Silver Moon for 82 points and a total of 254 and $11,217.
