ERIE, Pa. — Mike Gurtler’s goal at 3:09 of overtime lifted Mercyhurst to a 3-2 win over No. 19 Air Force in an Atlantic Hockey Association game Saturday.
The Falcons’ loss came on the heels of a 4-4 tie with Mercyhurst on Friday night.
Air Force (17-7-2, 14-4-2 AHA) is one point behind first-place RIT.
The Falcons had five shots on goal in overtime. Then with less than two minutes left, Air Force’s Greg Flynn took a slap shot from the left point that was blocked by Gurtler.
The puck bounced past Flynn, and Gurtler collected the puck in the neutral zone, skated uncontested down the right side and beat goalie Andrew Volkening with a shot just inside the far post.
It was the Lakers’ only shot during the overtime.
Josh Frider and Brent Olson scored goals for Air Force. The Falcons outshot the Lakers 45-25.
Air Force was 0-for-3 on power-play opportunities, and Mercyhurst (12-12-3, 10-6-3) was 0-for-4.
