LAKESIDE — An early Saturday morning altercation in Lakeside led two police officers to fire at an on-rushing Lexus, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
At 2:48 a.m., officers from the Mountain View, Lakeside, Wheat Ridge and Edgewater Police Departments all responded a report of gunfire at party in an apartment building in the 4300 block of Fenton St.
Police found shell casings and some blood on the steps leading to the front door, a statement from sheriff’s office said.
Police stopped a Jeep that was leaving the scene and while they were questioning the vehicle’s occupants, a green Lexus “aggressively” drove toward them.
Police officers from Lakeside and Wheat Ridge fired at the car and a Colorado State Patrol trooper chased the Lexus before losing it.
The Lexus, reportedly stolen from Arapahoe County, was later found abandoned at 14th and Raleigh Street .
About 20 minutes later, an adult male was taken to St. Anthony’s Central Hospital with a gunshot wound to the knee . The connection between his injury and the incident is uncertain.
“We are still in the infancy of this investigation,” said Jacki Kelley, Public Information Director with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office .
Dale Robinson, 57, a neighbor, said he called 911 after hearing the gun shots from his window. He said they sounded a bit like a machine gun.
“First, it was three shot intervals,” he said. “Then, after that, all hell broke loose.”
The Jefferson County Regional SWAT Team entered the apartment complex and removed five people.
One,an adult male, was taken to the hospital after experiencing a seizure . The others were taken to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office for questioning.
Kelley said that none of them are being kept on charges stemming from the shooting. Two are being held on unrelated warrants. “Officers from Lakeside have been out there numerous times in the past year,” Kelley said.
The possibility of gang violence involved in the shooting is still under investigation, she said.
