BOULDER — Colorado football coach Dan Hawkins just might have to become an NBA fan.

Among CU’s early signees this morning, during national signing day, is wide receiver Terdema Ussery of St. Mark’s in Dallas. Ussery’s father, Terdema L. Ussery II, is president and CEO of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks.

According to Internet recruiting sites, Ussery (6-feet-3, 182 pounds) picked CU over Stanford.

In need of size and athleticism at wide receiver, the Colorado football program received other good news early today when Andre Simmons (6-3, 201) of Independence (Kan.) Community College, chose the Buffaloes. Simmons, rated four stars by , had given an oral commitment to CU but made a recent visit to Kansas State. Last week he indicated he was favoring Kansas State.

Also among Colorado’s early signings was wideout Jarrod Darden (6-4, 211) of Keller, Texas. Darden had been one of the first prospects to extend an oral commitment to CU.

Good news also came from Narbonne High in Harbor City, Calif., when dual-threat quarterback Josh Moten (6-0, 177) picked CU over Washington. Moten is one of two quarterbacks in the class, joining fellow Californian Clark Evans (6-5, 225) of Los Alamitos.

Not all the news was good for Colorado. The Buffs missed out one of their top recruiting targets, wideout Diante Jackson of Walnut Creek, Calif., who picked Oregon over the Buffs. Moten’s teammate at Narbonne, safety Byron Moore, signed with Southern California. And wideout Emory Blake of Austin, Texas, chose Auburn over Colorado and Texas Tech.

CU coach Dan Hawkins will discuss the Buffs recruiting class during a news conference at 3:30 p.m. today.
