Library bill comes due.

A man in Yakima, Wash., is being charged more than $400 for overdue library books, books he says he never checked out.

Michael Rabadan says he used his library card only to surf the Internet. He lost his card sometime in the past two months. Since then, someone’s used that card to check out 41 items.

Rabadan told people at the Yakima Valley Library about his missing card on Nov. 19, but by then it was too late.

Last week, he got a notice from a collections agency saying he owed nearly $430 in replacement and overdue fees. Rabadan says he didn’t realize how important the card was and wishes the library would make sure they knew who was checking out books.

“(The librarian) was comparing it with a credit card,” Rabadan said. “If you’re going to compare it with a credit card, then they might as well check IDs. This situation wouldn’t have happened.”

A librarian said they only ask for IDs when patrons forget their library card or first open an account.

Night and Day, by Robert B. Parker

Jesse Stone sat in his office at the Paradise police station, looking at the sign painted on the pebbled- glass window of his office door. From the inside it read FEIHC, or it would have if the letters hadn’t been backward. He tried pronouncing the word, decided he couldn’t and stopped thinking about it. On his desk was a glamour head shot of his ex-wife. He looked at it for a time, and decided not to think about that, either.

Molly Crane came from the front desk and opened the door.

“Suit just called in,” she said. “There’s some kind of disturbance at the junior high school and he thinks you and I ought to come down.”

“Girls involved?” Jesse said.

“That’s why he wants me,” Molly said.

“I understand,” Jesse said. “But why does he want me?”

“You’re the chief of police,” Molly said. “Everybody wants you.”

Jesse glanced at Jenn’s picture again.

“Oh,” Jesse said. “Yeah.”
