Although the Front Range cartoonist community might not get much attention locally, it holds its own nationally in terms of quality, said Stan Yu, organizer of Squid Works, a Denver-based comics cooperative.

“Talent-wise, I think we’re right up there with the best of any other regional groups that are out there,” he said “It’s not as visible, because we don’t have any major comics-centric conventions here in Denver at this time.”

Squid Works has a dozen official members — artists with self-published books available in its online catalog — as well as another 160 or so affiliated artists.

A comics exhibition on display through Feb. 13 at the University Memorial Center Art Gallery at the University of Colorado at Boulder includes examples by five area artists.

Among them are Yu, who illustrates SubCulture, a mini- series and semi-weekly webcomic for Ape Entertainment, and Amy Hadley, who draws Madame Xanadu for Vertigo/DC Comics.
