DENVER—Members of the Colorado House may join the growing list of public employees taking a hit this year as the state struggles to balance its budget.

The 65-member House voted 60-3 on Thursday to take a four-day weekend Feb. 26 through March 1. That could save the state $12,000 if they all agree not to take their per diem payments on the extra days off.

State employees have been told to take five days off this year without pay.

Lawmakers can’t dock their own pay because it’s written into the state Constitution. But they can give up their per diem, which ranges from $45 to $150 a day for expenses, depending on where they live.

State senators say they have no plans to take the days off.
